We are organized under the International Association of Fire Fighters. We are a collective bargaining unit under contract with the city of Topeka, KS.

The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) is a labor union representing professional fire fighters in the United States and Canada. The IAFF was formed in 1918 and is affiliated with the AFL-CIO in the United States and the Canadian Labour Congress in Canada. Currently, the IAFF has 280,000 members in 3,100 locals.

The nation’s paid, professional fire fighters and paramedics protect 85 percent of the U.S. population.

The IAFF is one of the most active lobbying organizations in Washington. Its Political Action Committee, FIREPAC, is among the top 25 federal PACs among the more than 4,000 in the country.

Since 1918 the members of this local have provided the citizens and visitors of Topeka, KS with fire protection. Over the past 100 years members of Local 83 have expanded services offered to include EMS, hazardous materials, technical, and water rescue.

From natural disasters, fires, car wrecks, and medical calls the members of this local have always been willing to answer the call. For a few of our members that has meant the ultimate sacrifice. We will never forget them or members of our international family who gave all.

Our current membership is 237 strong and serves in many different roles. From the rank and file fire fighters, apparatus operators, lieutenants, captains, battalion chiefs, shift commanders, investigators, inspectors, training officers, and public education.
